Scar removal

Different scars disturb the general appearance of our body, regardless of their position. Scars can develop in different ways and they vary in shape, color and appearance. They develop as a result of an injury or surgical intervention, and are a product of healing capability of the human body. Scars can disturb the body in its normal function and cause limitation of movement, because of skin shrinkage and tension. Furthermore, they are sensitive to injury, they can sometimes open or cause itching. Scars can also cause stress with patients, because they are a frequent reminder of unpleasant events as e.g. an accident or illness.

Scar removal for men

How is scar removal done?

If common procedures (pressure treatment, ointments, cortisone injections and similar) do not accomplish the wanted results, surgical scar removal can be more efficient way to solve functional or cosmetic problems caused by scars. In some cases, excision of the small part of the skin with the scar will suffice, followed by fine suturing. For scars with great shrinkage or scars on the knuckles, we often must use special Z and W techniques or fold incision, in order to change scar direction. This will result in less tension on the scar edges. With great and severe scars a few interventions must be needed for the skin to relax and to give it enough time to heal correctly. Beside the above mentioned techniques, there also is the option of skin transplantation from another part of the body.

You will get all important information from your doctor during the consultation. You should avoid coagulants at least one week before the surgery and one week after the surgery (consult your general general practitioner). What happens after a scar removal?

If after the surgery a drainage for wound secretion was placed, it will be removed after 2 days, and the sutures will be removed after 1 - 2 weeks, depending on the surgery and suturing technique. You should move as less as possible, because of increased skin tension, in order for the wound not to open. Swelling, bruising and skin tension are normal, but will disappear in a few weeks.
